Pretty good. Prices were very reasonable. Most everything under $10.
We had the roast duck over rice, minced beef with egg over rice and singapore noodles.
Next time I'll try something different. The above three were alright but they prob have other good dishes.
Small place. Has been there for a long time. -

This should be my 2nd time coming to order some nice delicious bbq pork. This time I added dishes. Noodles and fried tofu. They were very nice and very helpful because the noodle I wanted I could never call it.
This will be our go to places for Chinese BBQ pork, Roast Pork and Roast Duck.
We will come here on Sunday for lunch, that would be my plan. -

I ordered take out and waited and waited and waited. Worse pretense of service ever!
In the past twenty years, we've eaten here many times. Sometimes I would have to take a break and not go for a while, not because of the food but because of the service. It seems that the front of the house has almost always been women run. No complaints about that. However, some of the women have been overly obnoxious with the loudness of their voices, their comments and attempts with humor.
Today, I was supposed to pick up some food for lunch for myself and a co-worker. I left the house 75 minutes before my start time and headed over to Castro Valley. My commute time to work without traffic is 25 minutes. On a nice weather Sunday, I like to give it 45 minutes in case of traffic. This still gives me 30 minutes to get to the restaurant (which is on the way to work), peruse the menu and order.
When I entered, there were about six tables with guests. One person was waiting for a to-go order and had a bowl with a spoon in front of him. I figured they gave a bowl of complimentary soup while he waited. Others were waiting to order, eating their food or simply conversing. There were a couple of people at the BBQ counter and another person picking up an order. There was also a large order waiting to be picked up consisting of a Whole Roast Pig and at least seven other aluminum containers.
I walked to the front and waited my turn. A waitress started to take my order and then told me to have a seat at a table near the door so we wouldn't be blocking the walkway. I ordered three dishes, a box of rice and asked for three paper plates. According to other yelpers, the employees all speak good English. Apparently neither my English nor my Cantonese were any good today because I ended up pointed at what i wanted on the paper menu. When she gave me a total, I handed her my credit card.
And then I sat. No water. No soup. No "your order will be up soon". Nada. Zip. The waitress did come by and drop off both copies of my credit card slip. I signed their copy, put mine in my wallet, clipped my purple pen to a copy of the take-out menu and waited some more. Ten minutes later, as she was passing by, she grabbed the credit card slip AND MY purple pen and my take-out menu. After I told her in Cantonese that was MY pen (funny how she understood that clearly), she tossed the menu and pen back onto the table without comment.
When my order was ready, she waved at me from near the cash register and loudly told me that my order was ready. Rather than bringing to me where I was sitting, she made me walk past the gauntlet of customers waiting to order or be seated. I asked about the three paper plates that I had asked for and she proceeded to read back the order to me. I asked again and she handed me some plates. It's a good thing that I didn't need forks or napkins. And I definitely didn't want any fortune cookies as I couldn't imagine my luck would be any good.
The food:
Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet - 5 - Nice thick pieces of fish, well cooked. Some onion and bell peppers and chunks of pineapple. Great flavor.
Ho Lon Jai - 2 - Large order but somewhat on the dry side and lacking flavor. This used to be one of my favorite dishes here. No more. There's another restaurant within five miles that has a better version of this dish on their steam table. Thiers even has Ginko Nuts in it!
Black Mushrooms with Bok Chow - 4 - Lots of Black Mushrooms with Lots of Bok Choy. Great flavor. Decent amount of juice to wet your rice. Problem? Too much water from the Bok Choy which leaked out of the clam shell. Fortunately, the clam shell was in a plastic bag so the juice was contained.
What's my gripe? There were four women running front of the house. One was wielding a cleaver, cutting up Roast Pork, BBQ Pork and other yumminess for customers. One was taking the BBQ orders and helping to package them. The other two were performing the tasks of servers, taking orders, accepting payment, deliverying food to tables, etc. All four seemed to need to get involved with each and every single order. And they all got involved by asking each other what order is that? who is that for? what do we need next? who ordered that? did you collect his money? All at an extremely high volume. Occasionally even yelling.
On top of that, my receipt says that my credit card was run at 12:15 and climbed back into my van at 12:50 and I was in the restaurant for ten minutes looking at the menu and then ordering. That means 45 minutes to order and receive three dishes and a box of rice.
And I was 15 minutes late to work. -

Went back for another visit after golf, today. I had one of my favorites - Beef Tomato Chow Fun w/gravy. It was really good - almost the way my mother used to make it. And the portion was humongous!
I had such a good time at lunch that I decided to order a number of items to take home. I got a little carried away because I ended up with $50+ more food than the single dish I had for lunch! But, the way they packaged it up was really impressive. The dry items were in plastic clam-shell boxes with venting holes cut into them so the crispy fried noodles would not go limp from trapped moisture. All the broths for the Won Ton Noodles and Ye Mein noodles were packaged separately and double-bags to prevent any messy spillage during the ride home. I thought that it demonstrated their great care and concern for their customers.,
I like their menu because it a solid Cantonese rendition with lots of variety. Back in the old days, Chinese restaurants were predominantly Cantonese. But now, most are Northern or Taiwanese menus and I am 'lost' in these cuisines. So for me, this place represents 'comfort food' and is proof positive that Cantonese cuisine is still alive and well!

Guess there's new owners?
I've not been stopping in for awhile and was impressed by the refreshed decor and menus. The old crew wasn't there except the BBQ mama-san, which was a good omen.
Just had a bowl of Wonton soup, which is hard to mess up. It just didn't have the same savory flavor as in the past. Even dousing it with shoyu, it wasn't the same as I've had before.
Hoping my friend, The Great George F samples the new fare and updates with his fine culinary review!
UPDATE: A message from George F. "I stopped going there. The food definitely changed. I go to Gum Kuo in Dublin." So there you have it!
